Beating Burnout through Locum Work
At some point in life, we start to feel stuck and the initial flame that lit our passion begins to burn out. For dentist Dr. Amy, this is exactly how she felt before she embarked on a locum journey that reignited her passion for dentistry and gave her room to grow and flourish in her field.
Dr. Amy’s passion for dentistry began at a young age. She was inspired by her local dentist, who gave her newfound confidence after fitting her with braces. Dr. Amy wanted to give people the same experience and confidence she got from her dentist, thus beginning her career in dentistry.
“I had a really good experience with my dentist growing up. I had braces which changed my life, gave me confidence and impacted me positively” she said.

As her career progressed, she began to feel stuck and pandemic lockdowns were not helping her situation either. She was ready to travel and sink her teeth into new experiences, outside of what she already knew. Dr. Amy saw locuming as a way to break from her day-to-day grind, find her drive again and be able to travel Australia.
Since then, she has been placed in regional Queensland, Thursday Island and regional Victoria. Each new place allowed her to meet new people, learn new skills and live at a difference pace of life compared to living in the city.
She found regional dentistry more fulfilling. It was less cosmetic compared to the city and allowed her to find her value in impacting people’s lives through positive dentistry experiences.
“I felt I had a greater impact in regional communities, especially on outreach where these communities don’t have a permanent dentist. I was able to do something good for their community” she said.
While on her most recent locum in Arrarat, Dr. Amy helped supervise dental students from her alma mater, Latrobe University. Her supervision of these students reignited her passion and reminded her why she’s a dentist and why she loves the job.
After every locum it gets harder and harder for her to leave the community and say goodbye to her new found friendships, but she continues to look forward to what her next locum will bring.
